CEREMONY HOUSE
Ceremony House Among Crimson Leaves
This artwork was created on site at the Japanese Garden in Hasselt, painted in watercolor while observing the ceremony house and its surroundings directly. The structure rests at the edge of water, framed by stone, foliage, and the shifting reflections of the garden.
The ceremony house is depicted without activity or figures. Wooden beams, open thresholds, and the sloping roof form a quiet geometry against the softer movement of water and leaves. Crimson maple foliage punctuates the scene, its color standing out gently against greens and pale reflections rather than dominating them.
The composition emphasizes balance and rhythm: architecture and landscape meeting without hierarchy, light settling across surfaces without a single focal point. The space feels held rather than staged — a place shaped for pause, observation, and continuity.
Watercolor was applied responsively, allowing washes to remain visible and edges to soften where water and light meet. The process remained open and attentive to the conditions of the moment. The resulting image reflects the experience of being there — unhurried, present, and grounded in place.
